Ciela’s Top 5
1. Chart the direction, not the destination.
“When we are talking about innovation, we need to know directionally where we are going but hold very loose to the outcome and destination that we are seeking.” – Dr. Ciela Hartanov
2. Recognize and reinforce stability.
“You can’t just be full-on all the time in uncertainty and novelty. It can be really fun, but it’s only really fun if you have some stability and certainty to come back to.” – Dr. Ciela Hartanov
3. Focus not on scale but network effect.
“When we are talking about innovation, I encourage every organization not to think about scale but to instead think about network effect. The reason for this is that good ideas will go viral, we know that from our day-to-day lives in social media.” – Dr. Ciela Hartanov
4. Reinforce a culture of awe and wonder.
“Wonder is a foundation for being able to have harder conversations.” – Dr. Ciela Hartanov
5. More experiments, less metrics.
“The reason why innovation can often lead to burnout is that you say ‘be innovative, run experiments’ but then you hold metrics over them. That is very stressful and is the opposite of creating space for innovation and learning.” – Dr. Ciela Hartanov
